Issue #14

CEO Corner

The weather may be warmer than usual, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the holidays just as much. We've had a lot of fun around here decorating the tree and getting in the holiday spirit, but now the new year is upon us.

We have a lot to look back on and be proud of this past year. The people we serve continue to make tremendous progress at becoming more independent, for those with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, and we're serving more Veterans than ever in Warrior Salute. Fewer things make us feel as good as seeing the people we serve move forward with their lives, and that's why we'll continue to do what we do.

It's also thanks to our wonderful and generous supporters who help to ensure we are able to provide essential services to those who need them. From all of us at CDS Monarch, thank you for everything you do.

Making Memories Through Independence

In October 2015, Maggie moved into Janes Road where she lives in her own apartment but still has support. “I like it,” she said. Maggie has learned to budget her money, maintain a clean home, and is now learning to cook. She said it was scary at first, and she was nervous but excited. “I am proud of her for making this decision,” Sue said. “Her happiness is what is most important to me.”

Rochester Americans Visit The Wolf Life Transitions Center

As part of their 3rd annual Amerks Assist Week, players from the Rochester Americans hockey team stopped by the Wolf Life Transitions Center. The evening began with a tour of the facility, during which the team learned about our facility and the wide variety of services we have to offer people with developmental disabilities, veterans, and seniors.

Once the tour concluded, the Amerks (even their mascot, Moose!) and participants from our recreation group geared up with their hockey sticks and hit the tile for some floor hockey. Everyone had a great time, and we're looking forward to another visit from the Rochester Americans!

Special Olympics Bowlers Bring Home Medal

The Genesee Special Olympic Regional Bowling Tournament was held on Friday and Saturday, November 6th and 7th, at Clover Lanes.

Due to the large number of participants for this event, there were three sessions with 200 plus bowlers each. CDS Monarch had 30 bowlers who participated in the second session.

Baking Season is Here!

The temperature may be a little warmer than we're used to around here, but it's still great to gather up your spices and bake some delicious treats. Salute Seasonings has a great variety of baking spices perfect for whatever you might be cooking up. And, best of all, 100% of proceeds from each sale go benefit Veterans in Warrior Salute

Warrior Salute Teams up with BodyMind Float Center for PTSD Pilot Study

Four Warrior Salute Veterans will receive free float sessions at BodyMind Float Center as part of the center’s Float it Forward initiative. Playing on the Pay it Forward concept, BodyMind Float Center won 2,400 pounds of epsom salt and has decided to use it to help rehabilitate Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Warrior Salute is committed to providing the best services for our nation’s heroes,” CDS Monarch President/CEO Sankar Sewnauth said. “That means embracing innovation and finding new ways to help the Veterans in Warrior Salute get back on their feet. We’re excited to see what kind of beneficial results the Veterans experience.”

Bingo at CDS Monarch Senior Living

Since opening in March of this year, the Lewis Wolf Blvd. Senior Living Facility has been booming with fun and games. In particular, some of the seniors have been enjoying Tuesday afternoon bingo games. This is a great way for the seniors to get together and meet some of their neighbors, and the room is usually full of laughter and conversation. This also serves as a way for the seniors to plan other activities together, such as their potluck dinners and book clubs.
