Issue #6

CEO Corner

I hope that this finds you all doing well. Fall is a season for giving thanks. I am thankful for all of the growth and transformation that has taken place at CDS Monarch this year, and for all of the individuals, families, donors, volunteers, and staff who make up the CDS Monarch family. We appreciate the many ways that you contribute to the success of our agency.

Here at CDS Monarch, the people that we assist are working hard each day to achieve their goals and dreams. It is always a joyful moment when someone is able to overcome a challenge they were facing, or they accomplish a personal goal of theirs. In the articles below you can read about several of these people and how they are celebrating the everyday of life.

I am also delighted to share an update with you about iCircle, and the Managed Long Term Care (MLTC) plan that we have been working to develop. Just recently, iCircle received its Certificate of Authority from New York State, as well as the NYSDOH contract! Our team has reviewed the contract, signed it and sent it back. Once it is signed by the State, iCircle Care will officially be able to begin enrollment for the MLTC plan.

Over the course of the next few months we will be hosting several events, including our annual Mascot Madness pancake breakfast and a Wellness Fair. I hope you will consider joining us, or signing up as a volunteer to support these events. They are always quite enjoyable. As always, please keep in touch - we love hearing from all of you!

Honoring CDS Monarch Founder, Phyllis Wolf

In September we were sadden by the news of the passing of CDS Monarch Founder, Mrs. Phyllis Wolf. Mrs. Wolf and her late husband Lew started with humble beginnings, meeting in their homes, bringing together a group of parents who wanted more for their children with developmental disabilities. Their vision was indepence, inclusion, and new opportunities for their loved ones. The Wolfs unselfishly devoted themselves to CDS Monarch and all of the individuals who have received services. With immense gratitude, we honor Mr. and Mrs. Wolf for their incredible dedication to, and support of, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community.  Read more >>

"Jenz Penz"

Jennifer, who participates in vocational training at Unistel's Wolf Center workshop, recently began designing her own pens, and they became an instant hit with her friends and family. She makes them in her spare time and budgets the money she needs to buy her supplies with the help of her advocates, who she currently lives with. Dave’s Store, located at the Wolf Life Transitions Center, is now selling “Jenz Penz”, in an assortment of colors and styles. Individual pens are available for purchase at $2.00 each. Arrangements of pens in vases with decorative stones in the bottom are also available, or if you want something truly unique, Jennifer will take your custom order.

Veterans Participate in Chartered Fishing Trip

On Saturday, September 27th the Veterans in Warrior Salute chose to go on a chartered fishing trip as their recreational outing for the weekend. Each of the six Veterans that participated caught at least one fish, all of which were taken back to the Nucor House and cooked that night for dinner, or frozen for future use. All of the Vets had a blast, and said even having to wake up at 4:45am was worth it for the experience.

Back to School

Each year CDS Monarch hosts "Shortstack Saturday", a pancake breakfast which raises money for a fund that can help those CDS Monarch families who may need some extra assistance. This season, some of these funds were used to purchase school supplies for several children who receive service coordination through CDS Monarch.

Our next Shortstack Saturday fundraiser will be held on Saturday, December 6th - see you there! If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Amber Johnson at (585) 347-1205 or email

Out to the Ball Game

First Niagara sponsored CDS Monarch for a Community Friday night at the Red Wings game. Michael Thom, who lives at CDS Monarch’s Embury Road residence, had the honor of throwing out the first pitch. Individuals from several other residences came out to watch the ball game. Thank you to First Niagara for supporting CDS Monarch's mission to assist people, like Michael, to live and thrive in their communities.

Unistel Opens a New Spice Testing Lab

Construction on a new spice testing laboratory at Unistel has been completed. Unistel staff members have begun their training to learn the processes and procedures of quality testing for spices and seasonings.

Golfing for Veterans

On Monday, August 4th the 2014 New York State Chapter CMAA Directors Outing took place at Oak Hill Country Club. The event raised $15,000 to support Warrior Salute. Thank you to all of the staff who assisted at the event that day to share about CDS Monarch's mission and ensure that they had a successful event in support of our Veterans.

Flutters Goes Mobile

Several individuals have taken Flutters (CDS Monarch's onsite restaurant) mobile for breakfast! Two days per week a couple of individuals from Vocational Services stock up their cart and hit the hallways at the Wolf Center to sell an assortment of breakfast items. The mobile Flutters cart has been quite popular and it has provided a new type of food service training for the individuals who are running it.
